Giulia Enders – Gut

Non-fiction / Thursday, November 1st, 2018

I’m sure this book doesn’t need any more PR as I’ve heard about it many times before finally buying it. A close friend’s words ‘it is life-changing’ were the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

Having finished it last week, I have to admit: it deserves both the publicity it has been getting and my friend’s enthusiastic comment. From my side I want to add: it is funny, engaging, very informative and will change your physical and mental state for the better, if you read it.

And yes, it’s all and only about gut.

Starting from advice on how to position yourself better on a toilet seat (get a step so your feet are lifted off the floor and it sort of resembles squatting) to details of latest research of our gut’s influence on mental health – there is nothing that is not discussed.

With just the right amount of breaking it down for the reader and sprinkling text with humour, Giulia Enders keeps you engaged through all the scientific information she readily provides. Her sister’s drawings are very entertaining as well!

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially those who suffer from IBS/food intolerances/allergies and similar, as it will help you to understand what’s going on with your body and how you can help it.

I personally made the following changes to my lifestyle:

  • started drinking probiotics;
  • embraced my korean side and stocked up on kimchi;
  • ordered a squatting toilet stool (do it even if you don’t read the book!);
  • put broccoli and organic meat on my regular shopping list;
  • relaxed some cleaning habits;
  • convinced my husband to stop using antibiotics every time he gets a cold.

If only all non-fiction books were so entertaining and had such a positive impact on our lives.
