Women’s Writing Selection

Book lists, Fiction, Non-fiction, Women's Writing / Thursday, March 8th, 2018

Ladies, this is your day. Where I’m from (Kazakhstan) 8th of March, International Women’s Day, is a bank holiday, and so it should be everywhere. Flowers, presents, words of appreciation and best gift of all – some ‘me’ time, while men are handling the world for one day 😂

Let’s celebrate with champagne and books, I prepared THE perfect selection for you to bubble-bath with:

1. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – We Should All Be Feminists. This one should be read by everyone, especially those who equate feminists with men-haters. It will take less than two hours of their precious time and will open their precious minds.

2. Margaret Atwood – The Handmaid’s Tale. Love dystopian novels that chill you to the core (and I believe I’m not alone in this). Read it to remember to appreciate and defend what you take for granted and what will seem like enormous privileges after this book.

3. Monica Ali – Brick Lane. How does a 16 year old girl married off to a man more than twice her age, who brings her from Bangladesh to East London and imposes passivity on her aspiring hands, know better than to listen and stay quiet? How do any girls learn think for themselves in societies that praise agreeableness and passivity as virtues all women should have?

4. Clarissa Pinkola Estes – Women Who Run With the Wolves. A collection of ancient tales about female characters and spirits, with insightful analysis from Clarissa on how to embrace the instinctual, natural feminine side of ourselves, how to trust it to guide you and why it knows best where.

5. Emily Dickinson – The Collected Poems. Do you know that Emily Dickinson lived most of her life in solitude, corresponding with a very small circle of close friends and preferred not to leave her house unless absolutely necessary? Sometimes I can fully relate to that. Too bad I bear no relation to such beautiful poetry.

6. Marina Cvetayeva – I’m Not a Love Heroine. A diary of another much loved female poet, about her life in Moscow post revolution and what she had to go through to make a living for herself and her daughter.
Hope you’ll enjoy the books I’ve picked for you 😊

P.S. if you run out soon – message me, I have many MANY more!
